What to Do If You Are Injured as a Cyclist or E-Scooter Rider in Houston

E-Scooter and cycling accidents have become increasingly common throughout Houston in recent years. A seemingly never-ending trend of an increase in vehicles on the road and pedestrians on the streets means ample opportunity for severe injuries as either a cyclist or e-scooter rider.

After suffering an injury in a Houston e-scooter or cycling accident, it is necessary to determine who is at fault. From there, creating a plan for being compensated for your injuries and other losses is essential. Where should you begin as you consider these steps?

Lopez Franco, PLLC, holds responsible parties accountable for injuring innocent people. If you have been injured in a cycling or e-scooter accident, contact our office today for a free case review.

Why are cycling and e-scooter accidents common in Houston?

A cycling or e-scooter accident can involve a rider being hit by another vehicle, striking another vehicle that does not follow the rules of the road, or even an accident involving a pedestrian. Densely traveled city streets offer a perfect environment for these types of accidents.

Bicycle and scooter lanes are few and far between throughout the city of Houston. Even if you do travel along roads that contain dedicated bicycle lanes, the lanes may be poorly marked and barely wide enough for a cyclist to proceed down the street.

Cyclists and e-scooter riders must share the road with vehicles moving at speeds much faster than their own. On top of that, automobile drivers are accustomed to looking for larger objects on the roads they travel at comparable speeds. On the other hand, cyclists and e-scooter riders are difficult to see in the best of conditions- not to mention at night or in bad weather.

At what speed can a cyclist or e-scooter rider travel on city streets?

If a Houston-area street has a posted speed limit of thirty-five (35) miles per hour or less, then a cyclist or e-scooter rider may drive on that street. Cyclist lanes are more common than they once were, especially inside Loop 610. When a street has a bicycle lane, it is advisable to use it. There is a law in the city of Houston that an e-scooter rider may not travel at speeds greater than fifteen (15) miles per hour.

Determining fault in a Houston cycling or e-scooter accident

A Houston cycling accident attorney, Lopez Franco, PLLC, has extensive experience serving our clients injured in cycling and e-scooter accidents. Texas is known as a “proportionate responsibility” State. So long as you are not more than 50% at fault for the accident, you may still be able to recover damages from the at-fault party.

Recovering damages for injuries, lost wages, and harm suffered by your relationships with family members is possible. However, it is essential to act intentionally when creating a plan for your case.
